Promoting Access & Accountability in Behavioral Healthcare

Psychologist & Healthcare Executive
PLEASE NOTE
While the behavioral healthcare field offers a range of effective biopsychosocial solutions, its dismal rates for access to care must be considered the field's most fundamental problem. While success will not be easily achieved, the focus must be on the three C's that drive access--Cost, Culture, and Convenience.
Behavioral health's chronic underfunding will not be rectified until payers know the clinical outcomes for the services they fund. Technology called Measurement-Based Care (MBC) can now provide this. Wide implementation will require a financial investment and realization that today's focus on evidence-based care fails to meet our goal of accountability.
One critical step in solving the care access crisis is to transform the primary care setting into an initial level of care for behavioral health. The behavioral workforce must grow there to address wide-ranging behavioral problems with brief interventions, the supplemental use of digital therapeutics, and routine monitoring with MBC technology.
